RESEARCH and HISTORY NOTES

SULTAN CHICKEN

The Sultan was originally developed as an ornamental breed for the Sultan of Constantinople (now Istanbul) and was introduced to the UK in 1854 by Miss Elizabeth Watts of Hampstead, London. All of the Sultans in the UK are descended from this original flock as there was only one more hen imported from Turkey.

The Sultan chicken originated in southeastern Europe the 14th century Ottoman Empire but were bred in Turkey under the name Serai Täook, translated “Sultan’s Fowl” or “Fowl of the Sultan.” (Serai means “Sultan’s palace” and Täook means “fowl.”) Legend has it that Sultan chickens were used as living ornaments in the gardens of Sultans.

The Sultan chicken has been a rare breed since its arrival in England in 1854. Elizabeth Watts of Hampstead, England, and the editor of the London-based Poultry Chronicle received the fowls from a friend who was living in Constantinople. She wrote that the birds arrived in dreadful condition – dirty and mud-stained with feathers matted together. It was months later, once the birds had a chance to molt their ruined feathers, before she could see they were pure white. The original importation documentation notes that the birds did less damage to grass runs than would be expected of Cochin or Brahma – their runs remained green.

The first Sultan chickens came to America in 1867. A woman in New York sent them to author and poultry expert Geroge O. Brown, who wrote that the chickens were the tamest and most contented birds he ever owned. He noted that they were fonder of grains and insects than vegetables, and that they “almost constantly” sang that contented chicken song.

White Sultans were included in the first American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection (then called the Standard of Excellence) in 1874. They almost went extinct in the 1930s and remain rare today.

The Sultan is unique in that it has more distinguishing features than any other breed: a V-shaped comb, crest, beard, muffs, large nostrils, white or pale flesh colored beak, reddish-bay eyes, wings carried low, vulture hocks, feathered shanks and toes, and five toes on each foot. The wings are held drooped in a way that obscures the thighs and upper hocks. Sultans are pure white in color and have slate blue shanks and toes. They tend to stand somewhat erect. Males weigh 6 lbs. and females weigh 4 lbs.

Sultan chickens lay 50+ small white eggs a year, are non-sitters, and once had a reputation of being a good table fowl – the breast being large and the flesh being delicate and white. Early breeders made outcrosses to Polish chickens to add new blood. The breed has only one recognized color – White. Blue and Black Sultans are likely due to crosses made with Polish chickens.

Sultan chickens are wonderful pets and yard ornaments.

They do well in confinement, and with cool water and shade they do better in warm climates. They are also often bullied by more assertive breeds, so should be kept with breeds of similar temperament. They like people and like to be held, and roosters are not usually aggressive. They are chatty but not loud. They are delicate foragers and prefer grain and insects to vegetation.

Sultans have a great deal of decorative plumage, including large, puffy crests, beards, long tails, and profuse foot feathering. Their small, V-shaped combs are almost entirely hidden under feathering. Sultans are also one of a minority of breeds to have five toes on each foot. With males weighing approximately 2.7 kilos (6 pounds) and hens 2 kilos (4 pounds), they are the smallest of the large breeds of chickens. They also have a bantam version.

NB:

RELIABLE FERTILITY. WE HATCH OUT ALL OUR OWN EGGS SO WE KNOW THEY ARE FERTILE BUT PLEASE Bear IN MIND THAT EGGS SENT THROUGH THE POST WE CANNOT GUARANTEE FERTILITY. (I have incubated 12 eggs and they were all fertile.)

I use and recommend Brinsea Maxi II Eco (30 hens eggs). Even when you are incubating 6 eggs it gives plenty of room for the newly hatched to stay together waiting for all to hatch. I have had more success with this model than any other.

Hatching Eggs Are Very Sensitive to disturbance. I cushion eggs with tissue paper within the poly box and send they double boxed for the best possible journey. This still does not prevent Courier damage in some cases. Though I have found only one broken egg during last two years.

So if you want EGGS "Through Postal System" then Hatching will be your own risk.

Collection in person can be arranged and is preferable to ensure the best hatch rate.

All eggs posted will be under 5 days old. The laying dates will be on each egg in pencil.

Eggs will be posted on a one day delivery In a polystyrene egg box, double boxed.

I have a limited supply of eggs so they can be ordered by arrangement to suit.

This listing is for 6 RARE BREED Red Saddle Yokohama Phoenix hatching eggs! These large fowl eggs are tested and their hatch rate is very good. The hatch time is 21 days. They can be incubated under correct settings or put under a reliable broody hen. The breed is known for their beautiful red and white feathers and an exceptionally long elegant white tail, making them a unique and highly sought after addition to poultry collections. The Yokohama is a smallish chicken with an unusually long tail, and long trailing saddle feathers. It has a pea- or walnut-comb. The beak, legs and feet are yellow. The eggs are from previous show winning stock.

If you love the Yokohama or Phoenix Bird you might know that in Japanese art, the Phoenix bird is often featured on trees with its long tails flowing very decoratively, whether on pottery, paintings, jade stone, etc. (I have some of these in my listings if you want to have a look under Phoenix…👀)

The Yokohama is kept mainly for showing. Full-sized hens lay about 80 eggs per year; they are tinted and weigh about 40g.

These fertile eggs are perfect for those looking to breed or raise their own chickens. Yokohama Phoenix breed, a rare and valuable addition to your collection.

RESEARCH NOTES:

The Yokohama is a German breed of fancy chicken, with unusual colouring and very long tail-feathers. It was created by Hugo du Roi in the 1880s, and derives from ornamental birds brought to Europe from Japan in the second half of the nineteenth century.

In Germany two colours are recognised, white and red-saddled. In the United Kingdom, where the name Yokohama is used also for the birds known in Germany as Phoenix, there are several more colours in addition to red-saddled and white; these include black-tailed buff, blue-red, spangled, 328 black-red, golden duckwing and silver duckwing. In the United States, the red-saddled (red-shouldered) and white varieties were added to the Standard of Perfection in 1981.

The earliest recorded long-tailed fowls were found in China and sent home by Japanese diplomatic representatives. This was sometime between AD 600 and 800 in our calendar. Not all accounts agree about dates and details of events so long ago. The original type birds were called Shokoku in Japan, and from them were developed several other Japanese longtailed breeds, which are summarised at the end of this Standard. Several of these Japanese long-tailed breeds were exported to Europe, the first recorded by M. Girard, a French missionary, in 1864. These and later shipments were consigned from the port of Yokohama, which became the name by which all long-tailed fowls were called by Europeans who were not able, or did not bother, to discover the true breed names and details from Japanese experts. A leading German fancier, Hugo du Roi, bred and promoted the red lobed and, somewhat gamey, red saddled white Yokohama (circa 1880), but it is not clear if he made them himself by crossing various imports or actually imported birds of this colour and type. This variety is unknown in Japan now, but might have existed then. In an effort to bring some order to their assortment of imported types, German fanciers restricted the name Yokohama to the red saddled whites, and invented a new name, Phoenix, for the white lobed, single combed type. British fanciers formed a Yokohama Club about 1904 and decided to use that name for all types; which is why we now have one very long and complex Standard for what really should be several breeds. Yokohama bantams were made by various German fanciers by crossing large Yokohamas with assorted bantams of appropriate colours.

I will try post eggs Monday to Thursday so eggs will not sit in the post over the weekend unless requested otherwise.

RESEARCH NOTES:

The Polish or Poland is a European breed of crested chicken. Its origins are unknown; similar birds are shown in seventeenth-century images from Italy and the Netherlands.

The birds have a small v-shaped comb and an abundant crest of feathers on the crown of the head. They are kept for show or for ornament. There are bearded, non-bearded and frizzle varieties.

Etymology

The origins of the breed's name in the English language are uncertain. The breed could have been named after the country of Poland.[3] Its name could have also come from the Middle Dutch word pol 'head' (compare origin of poll tax), in reference to the Polish's dome-shaped skull.[4]

In some European countries the breed is known as "Dutch crest fowl" in the respective languages. In Poland it's known as Polish crest fowl (Czubatka Polska) The old type of the breed, less numerous, was still cultivated in Poland, where it's now known as Old-Polish crest fowl (Czubatka staropolska).

History

Though the derivation of the Polish breed is unclear, one theory suggests that their ancestors were brought by Asian Mongols to Central and Eastern Europe during medieval times, and thus, could have originated in Poland.[citation needed] Crested chickens are seen in paintings from the 15th century, and in Dutch and Italian paintings from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.

Though usually only a fair layer at best today, in France they were formerly kept for their eggs. Three colour varieties were included in the first edition of the Standard of Perfection in 1874; additional varieties were added in 1883, 1938 and 1963.

Characteristics

The Polish has a small v-shaped comb, which may be hidden by the crest. The earlobes and wattles are small and may also be completely hidden. Some varieties possess "beards" and thus may also hide the appearance of the wattles. The earlobes are white, the comb and wattles bright red.

Sizzles, Frizzles, and Frazzles

If Frizzles, Sizzles and Frazzles all look pretty similar to you, then you're not alone, but what makes each one different from the other? To be honest, I still struggle to tell them apart and unless you know for definite what each one’s parentage is, it can be difficult to identify them. Over the years I have run into quite a few people who think the Frizzle is feather type and not a breed on its own with its own standards of perfection. There is much speculation about where they originate from and the truth is no one knows exactly where they all came from. However, what we do know is that they are an old breed and that the Frizzle is BOTH a feather variety and a breed all on its own.

The main thing to remember is that Frizzles, Sizzles and Frazzles have only one common thing between them and that is the curly feathered gene or frizzle gene. Otherwise, they are completely different birds. All three types of these chickens have either one or two copies of the gene which causes curled feathers.

A Frizzle is a chicken of any breed with the curled feather gene and is often found in bantams and true bantams. Historically the Frizzle was a bantam Cochin or Pekin with the curled feather gene bred in. Frizzles, like most other ordinary breeds of chickens, have four toes.
